The joined effort of TGR and different organizations is finally ripe. On 22th October, the marriage amendment bill was finally voted down by over half of the LC members in its second reading. This is a moment of history because nowadays, bills raised by the government are usually escorted by pro-establishment camp under this unjust system of the council. This chance to reject government’s bills is very rare. Of course, this is only possible under endless endeavor and lobbying, such as Joanne‘s agenda over the last year to meet key LC members, convince them of our stance, and show them the pros and cons of the amendment.
To really have an ideal gender recognition act in Hong Kong, we still have a long way to go, so much works to do. In previous meetings, we have discussed about how to amend our appellation on letters, registration of public service according to our real gender, before any gender reassignment surgery. Noticing the inconvenience and disruption our friends faced in doing so, TGR launched a new project to research on it in aim to find a way out. This time, we invited professors and a team of graduate students from the law department of the University of Hong Kong to carry out the research. Therefore, in the coming meeting, we would like to discuss all possibilities of getting the appellation you want, under the law!
